Kheema Mutter is an easy recipe that is very versatile. It can be had as a side dish with rice and dal or as a filling in a sandwich or the meat in pide / pita bread. Kheema means mince in Hindi - you can use beef, lamb or chicken mince. I have used lamb mince. Mutter is the Hindi word for green peas - and that is how you get the mince with peas. It is a great combination - the sweetness of the peas with the savory meat. This dish goes very well with all the Indian breads too and is a favorite with my husband.
Ingredients:
500 grams mince ( I have used lamb, you can use beef or chicken too)
1 large onion, chopped
2-3 green chillies, chopped
1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
1 large tomato, chopped
1 cup frozen green peas
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon chilli powder
2 teaspoons coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
2 tablespoons oil
salt to taste
a small handful of chopped coriander to garnish
Method:
In a saucepan, heat oil. When the oil gets hot, add the cumin seeds. When the seeds sizzle, add the onions and the green chillies and saute till the onions start to get golden. Next add the ginger garlic paste and saute for a few more minutes. Add the turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder. Saute for a few more minutes until the powders lose the raw smell.
Add the tomatoes next and saute well - you will see the tomatoes starting to get mushy and releasing the juices. Add the meat now and brown evenly. Add salt and let it cook for 30 to 35 minutes. Next add the green peas and cook for 5 minutes more. Add the garam masala and give the meat a good mix. Add salt to taste. Turn off the stove. Garnish with coriander leaves.
